Nora: I’m Nora Yu. This week, on The News with Nora …

Nora: The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage.

This renowned religious event demonstrates the love and devotion of Mazu’s followers, who attend in their thousands. The journey starts and ends in Miaoli, at the Baishatun Gong Tian Temple. At around 400 kilometers long, it’s considered Taiwan’s longest foot pilgrimage, though no one knows its exact length. This is because the route changes every year. It’s directed by Mazu’s statue, which is carried in a big pink palanquin. When it leans or moves, so does the crowd! In the past, this belief has led pilgrims up mountains, through forests, and even into supermarkets. One year the group had to wade across the Zhuoshui River! This year’s pilgrimage starts on March 18^th, and can be followed online.
