Nora: The biggest news …the best guests …the boldest events This is ‘The World in Brief’ with Max McGrath.

Nora: Celebrating annual World Bollywood Day, roving reporter Max McGrath joins us live from Mumbai, India, where he’s busy basking in Bollywood bliss! Max?

Max: Thanks Nora. I’m at Film City, Mumbai’s famous one-stop shop for all things Bollywood. This cutting-edge film complex comes complete with over 520 acres of land, a host of high-end studios, and over 100 diverse filming locations. Local choreographer Kaajal Dhawan joins me now. Kaajal, welcome to the show.

Kaajal: Thanks Max! What do you think of Film City?

Max: I love it here! Thanks for the tour. It was cool getting to see all those famous film sets! Like the prison from ‘Sholay’ …

Kaajal: ‘Sholay’ is one of my favorite movies! You’re a Bollywood fan?

Max: Of course! Isn’t everyone?

Kaajal: Not yet, but our fan base is growing, thanks to online streaming sites.

Max: How did people find it before the internet?

Kaajal: Well, it’s been popular here for generations. As Asian people moved to other continents, we shared our culture with the world. It’s the reason why Bollywood has its own holiday now too, to promote it globally.

Max: Bollywood isn’t the only film industry in Asia though, is it?

Kaajal: Not at all. Look at all the projects coming out of Taiwan right now! Big international successes! Movies like ‘A Sun’, or ‘The Falls’. There were 92 Taiwanese titles at Berlin’s annual European Film Market this year! That’s huge.

Max: True. But it’s a drop in the ocean, compared to the number of Bollywood movies made every year! India produces so much great content.

Kaajal: You know, Bollywood is just one of India’s film industries. We have many more!

Max: Oh right. I thought Bollywood was the name for all Indian cinema …

Kaajal: Don’t worry, most people make the same mistake. The word ‘Bollywood’ comes from two words mashed together: ‘Bombay’, and ‘Hollywood’. Bombay is the old name for this city.

Max: How do people celebrate World Bollywood Day here, in Mumbai?

Kaajal: How do you think? By watching movies, of course!

Max: I read that ‘Kismet’ was the first major Bollywood blockbuster, in 1943. What’s made Hindi cinema so successful for so long?

Kaajal: Bollywood’s always tried to be representative. India was struggling in the 40’s. People here were dealing with some really serious issues, like World War Two, and British colonialism. ‘Kismet’ put everyone’s lived experiences up on screen, which gave a voice to the people.

Max: What about all the famous musical numbers?

Kaajal: Well, not all Bollywood movies have singing and dancing.

Max: Could you teach me any classic moves, for World Bollywood Day?

Kaajal: OK, this one’s called the ‘Thumka’. It’s easy. Hands on hips! We step forward 4 times. On the fourth step, we push out our hips.

Max: How far?

Kaajal: As far as they’ll go. Ready?

Max: I think so …Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! Let me sign off! This is Max McGrath reporting live from Film City, Mumbai …
