Nora: I’m Nora Yu. This week, on The News with Nora …
Nora: 228 Peace Memorial Day.
This week people all over Taiwan will be paying tribute to one of the island’s most painful historical events: The 228 Incident.
On February 28th, 1947, the people of Taiwan protested against the government’s cruel, disrespectful attitude towards them. They were met with brutal force. Thousands were killed, and countless others were injured.
One of the main sites of the Incident was at Taipei’s 228 Peace Memorial Park. Protesters took over a radio station there, in an effort to boost support for their cause. Today, that old radio station is a national museum, dedicated to archiving and recording the terrible events of the 228 Incident. Their goal is to educate people of the Incident, so nothing like this ever happens again.
