Nora: I’m Nora Yu. This week, on The News with Nora …
Nora: International Mother Language Day.
Right now there are over 7000 languages in use worldwide. Many of them are indigenous languages, only known and used by small communities.
International Mother Language Day is a global holiday, made to promote all languages, big or small. It celebrates culture, diversity, and heritage all over the world.
It was first proposed by the Bangladeshi government to UNESCO in 1998, in memory of the 1952 Bengali Language Movement, where five lives were lost and hundreds were injured in defense of their language and culture.
This year’s holiday is themed ‘Multilingual education’. Its aim is to provide better access to learning materials for more people around the world, no matter what their mother language may be.
