Host: A traditional Taoist and Buddhist festival, when the gates of hell are opened and ghosts leave the underworld to walk among the living
Voice: Why?
Host: Some see this as a happy time, to remember friends who have died. For others it’s a reminder to be cautious, and not to anger the spirits!
Voice: Who?
Host: Unlike other similar events, this festival encourages people to help all departed spirits, both remembered and forgotten
Voice: How?
Host: In Taiwan, people burn joss paper, go to temple, and leave offerings of food and drink for spirits to feast upon
Voice: Where?
Host: Recognized all over East Asia, each country has its own alternative versions, with differing customs and beliefs
Voice: When? Host: It begins annually at the start of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, and lasts 30 days, this year from July 29th to August 26th
