Audience: You Lose!
Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen please put your hands together for: Rosie and Jim!
Chuck: Rosie, Jim, welcome to the show! Both: Thanks Chuck! Chuck: Let’s get started! Our topic today is … Taxes!
Chuck: Hey Jim, speaking of taxes, why do you think they call money ‘dough’?
Jim: I’m not sure, Chuck
Chuck: Because we all KNEAD it!
Chuck: Let’s begin! Question One: Which 18th Century American statesman wrote: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”?
Rosie: Benjamin Franklin!
Chuck: Correct! Question Two: When does the Taiwan tax year begin and end?
Jim: January 1st to December 31st Chuck: Correct! Question Three: In what month do people need to file their income tax in Taiwan?
Rosie: Err … Well, if the Taiwan tax year ends in December then … maybe … December?
Chuck: Aww! Sorry Rosie! Great try, but that’s the wrong answer! Let’s head over to Clever Corner to find out more from our resident know-it-all, Sally Smartypants! Sally?
Sally: Thanks Chuck! The correct answer is, in fact, right now! In Taiwan we have to get our income tax filed between the 1st and 31st of May every year.
Chuck: This year we have until the end of June, Taxes are hard!
Sally: They can get really tricky … Like if you’re a foreign resident: did you know if you’re here for less than 183 days you pay 18 percent tax on your earnings …
Chuck: Uh-huh …
Sally: … And if you stay over 183 days you have your tax collected on a progressive scale going up from 5 percent to 40 percent, depending on the amount you earn …
Chuck: … yep … Sally: Other factors make a difference too, like charitable donations, or … hey, Chuck! Wake up! Chuck: Sorry Sally! This is pretty … tough stuff!
Sally: Lucky for you the government’s website can help. Always double check any information online before filing anything.
Chuck: That is lucky! Honestly, I’ve never been great with finances … I blame my mother. She gave me lunch money every day, but it tasted awful! Sally: That was a cheap joke, Chuck …
Chuck: How do you mean? Sally: It didn’t make any … CENTS! Chuck: Haha! Or dollars, or dimes! Thank you Sally for another fascinating cruise down Clever Corner.
